The son of the famous and illustrious Prithviraj Kapoor, Raj Kapoor is an equally famous actor, director and producer. He is the second generation Kapoor family. They are the first family of Indian cinema and have done immeasurable contribution to the Hindi movie industry. He started his career as a child actor in the 1930’s through the movie Inquilab. His first big break came in the movie Neel Kamal which was released in 1947, the year of India’s independence. He starred opposite heroine Madhubala. Next year, he opened his own R K Studios and ventured full-fledged into movie direction and production. The studio still exists in Mumbai, Chembur area as a tribute to the legend and his contribution of Indian cinema. Most of his movies were produced and released under the banner of RK Films. There were movies outside the R K banner as well in which he has enacted.

His first directorial debut was Aag in which he starred with Nargis. The pair would go on to release some of the biggest hits of the 1950’s Indian cinema. Other movies under R K Films include Aawara , Shree 420, Jaagte Raho, Jis Desh Mein Ganaga Behtee Hain. The first two namely Aawara Hoon and Shree 420 turned out to be the mega hit of the decade. The movie, characters and songs became household in every sense. The numerical 420 itself became a synonym for twisted and crooked methods. The songs in these movies, especially Aawara Hoon and Mera Jootha Hai Japani spread across the country and was on everybody’s lips. Both these songs are very much popular even today.

There were many other movies outside the R K banner which were equally successful and these included Aah, Anari, Chalia, Dil Hi to Hai and more… The movie worth mentioning is Boot Polish which was produced by Raj Kapoor and known for its focus on social and poverty related issues. Another movie which saw major success was Sargam. It had Rajendra Kumar as the co-hero and was the first colour production and direction under the RK Studio banner.  Both the movie and the songs were major commercial successes. In 1970, the movie Mera Naam Joker was released after almost 6 years in the making. It was praised for its critical and offbeat theme and was adjudged as one of the cult classic movies in Indian cinema.
